Automated Packaging Machinery, Form-Fill-Seal, and Case Handling Systems

This course provides technicians with foundational and applied knowledge required to maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot industrial packaging and case handling equipment. Students explore the mechanics, timing sequences, and operational parameters of primary packaging machinery, including vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal systems. Instruction covers material web handling, tension control, heat and ultrasonic sealing jaws, volumetric and gravimetric dosing interfaces, and date-coding mechanisms. As the line transitions to secondary packaging, learners examine the mechanical linkages, drive systems, and vacuum pickup cups utilized in case erectors, product packers, and case sealers. Emphasis is placed on preventative maintenance schedules, mechanical changeovers for differing package formats, fault diagnosis, and safety standards such as lockout/tagout. Through systematic bench work and mechanical alignment tasks, technicians gain the rigorous diagnostics capabilities necessary to minimize packaging line downtime and ensure consistent container integrity across high-throughput industrial facilities.
